For some conditions, such as inflammatory types of arthritis, steroid injections are often useful in the short term while you and your doctor find the right medications to control your arthritis in the long term. In this case, once your arthritis is well controlled the need for injections should be reduced. Steroid injections, also called corticosteroid injections, are anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a range of conditions. Oral steroids – One trial has shown that CTS responds to a short course of oral steroids (Chang 1998).

How do steroid injections work and how effective is it?

They’re often prescribed to people with a history of blood clots or an increased risk of developing them. Steroids that are injected into muscles and joints may cause some pain and swelling at the site of the injection. If a woman needs to take steroid tablets whilst she is breastfeeding, prednisolone is usually recommended. Steroid injections, inhalers and sprays aren’t thought to pose a risk to babies being breastfed.

• The most common side effect is intense pain and swelling in the joint where the injection was given.
• If your child does have chicken pox, their steroid doses may need to be stopped.

• The HIV medication may increase the level of corticosteroid in your body.
• Steroid joint injections may not cure the underlying problem or condition affecting your joint.

If you have a local anaesthetic, the pain in your joint will ease within a few minutes. The effects of the local anaesthetic may last for a couple of hours or sometimes more. You may need pain relief to help with any discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off. They will inject the medicines into the inflamed area of your joint.

Steroid Injections

Steroids come as pills or a liquid that’s injected into a muscle. Often steroids are taken in ‘cycles’ of weeks on, followed by weeks off, then on again. They are also used for ‘stacking’, which is where you take several types of steroids together to strengthen their effects.

Who can use corticosteroids?

This clearly avoids any risk of injection injury but oral steroids have a deservedly bad reputation for side effects. Regular large doses of steroids administered to the whole body cause weight gain, diabetes, osteoporosis and thinning of the skin and are highly undesirable long-term treatments. Given that a single local injection, entailing a tiny overall systemic dose of steroids insufficient to cause any of this, is so effective in CTS there seems to be no good reason to use oral steroids.

Facial flushing – we have met thirteen patients (12 of them female) who reproducibly experience marked facial flushing for a day or two after steroid injection. Courses of steroids, known as “cycles”, last between 4 and 12 weeks. It is common to use a combination of steroids at the same time, which is known as “stacking”.

We eventually concluded that only 41% of the patients had required surgery during that 8 year period. The un-operated patients had had between 1 and 10 injections, with an average of two. In low doses, steroid tablets may provide significant relief from pain and stiffness for people with psoriatic arthritis. Temporary use of higher doses of steroids may help a person recover from a severe flare-up of the condition.

If your child hasn’t had chicken pox, and is in direct contact with a child who has chicken pox, or develops it within 48 hours, contact the hospital immediately. We’ll arrange for a blood test to check your child’s antibodies to chicken pox and your child may need an injection to protect them, but your doctor or nurse will talk through this with you.
